Song Review:

South

Overall Impression:

Taking an opportunity to let his hand-selected studio musicians to light up the room unaccompanied, Nolan Bruce Allen's original instrumental tune, "South", is a non-stop tour of talent in motion!  Each member of the ensemble takes a turn in the spotlight, highlighting the depth of skill and range of artistry that have come to define the NBA's timeless sound while simultaneously delivering fans of the genre three whole minutes of uninterrupted instrumental bliss!

Strongest Point(s):

Where to begin?!  Every instrumentalist in Nolan Bruce Allen's ensemble performs as brilliantly here as they do in other recordings, but with more than enough panache to hold the focus in their own rights!  The initial fiddle feature is a perfect opening statement, capturing the classic Western Swing introduction with more than a little fire behind its bowed tones before deftly handing the show over to the plucked strings and then the well-tickled ivories.  Soon, a dulcet electric guitar tone takes center stage and delivers a spirited phrase before punctuating it at 1:12 with an unbelievably delicate and dazzlingly accurate string of harmonics.  More movement back and forth between plucked and bowed strings ends with a deeply satisfying unison run to round the track out - solidifying the scene as some of the liveliest instrumental Western Swing around!

Target Audience Appeal:

Listeners with a love for the melodic motions that keep Western Swing swingin' will adore the all-too-brief instrumental expedition contained in Nolan Bruce Allen's "South" - featuring a lick in the limelight from each of the singer's hand-selected studio musicians with deftly artistic expertise!  Regardless of listening background or preference, anyone with an ear for quality should sit back and let the sound of a marvelously capable Western Swing band wash over them with "South"! - Jon W.
